Goals

The main goal of this course is to introduce the fundamental networking concepts and technologies. The course materials will assist in developing the skills necessary to plan and implement small IP networks across a range of applications.

Content

In this course, students will learn both the practical and conceptual skills that build the foundation for understanding basic networking. They will learn the layers of communications in data networks via the TCP/IP layering model. Students will learn to design small IP networks, how to select the appropriate IPv4 address ranges, calculate the addresses to be assigned and apply the required subnet masks. They will learn how to build a simple Ethernet network using routers and switches, how to employ basic cabling and network designs to connect devices. Moreover, students will learn to analyze the operations and feature of the transport and network layer protocols and services, and detect and troubleshoot inappropriate working.

In the practical part of the course, students will gain experience using networking utilities and tools, such as Packet Tracer network simulator and Wireshark network analyzer, to explore networking protocols and concepts. These tools will help students develop an understanding of how data flows in a network. Moreover, they will learn to use Cisco CLI (Command Line Interface) commands to perform basic router and switch configuration and verification.

Prerequisites

The content of the lecture on "Communication Systems" is beneficial.
